Invasive Mussels Could Cost Millions in Northern New Mexico
April 10, 2012 -- If zebra or quagga mussels colonize in San Juan County waters, it could cost millions of dollars to mitigate the creatures' effects, regional water officials said Thursday night.
About 20 people attended a meeting at McGee Park regarding quagga mussels, hosted by the San Juan Water Commission. A sign that read "The incoming invasion" and had pictures of a boat motor encrusted with mussels was posted to the door in front of the meeting room.
"The biggest impact on the average person will be the cost," said Randy Kirkpatrick, the executive director for the San Juan Water Commission. "Everybody will be paying more." Read the full story to get the details.
